Hey Rhiannon

''Witches, and ghosts, and village legends, though the belief in them may still linger in remote parishes, are becoming, as the old man at Rollright said, less cared for and will soon be things of the past. But are the thoughts, and the interests, and the beliefs that are rising up in their place calculated to advance the morality and the religion of the labouring classes? I fear not''.

Eerily insightful. And absolutely relevant today! Where'd you find the quote? I'm interested to know what the letter in context of.

It's from Notes and Queries, which (as you might know) is like a Victorian version of an internet forum (honestly) with people casting questions out across the country and people replying if they can. Just took a bit longer in those days. People used to give themselves pseudonyms rather like today too. I can read the archive because I've got a password from my library, otherwise you have to pay up. But I can email you what it says if you like (it's a bit long to bore people with here maybe). It's about the folklore of the Rollrights and the area.
