The Culture Show annoys me because it leans too far over towards that hideous 'elitist' notion that art and culture is somehow for connoiseurs, expensive people or educated middle class bullshitters.

Of course I want to know about the latest cultural activity going on in our nation and beyond, but I don't want it dressed up in poncy language delivered by tightarsed people spouting notions and 'isms' that alienate huge swathes of our population. Grrrr!!! Give art back to the people for godssakes.

Bring on my hero Waldemar Januszczek - he gives art back to the people. As does the lovely Matthew Collings. They actually EXPLAIN stuff.

It's presented in a very uncritical way adn you're right it's pretty elitist. There was this photographer on last night, he was taking (completely set up) photos illustrating newpaper stories, and basing the composition on famous paintings of yore. Hardly what you'd call original or groundbreaking, sounded more like art student standard but this is going to be the first exhibition of photos in the National Gallery. I thought it was utter rubbish and the photos weren't even very good as far as I could tell. Anyway perhaps I'm being a snob. But it was just the way it was presented, as though he was a genius and this was a brand new idea.

At least the other week when someone was extolling the virtues of (American female photographer I've forgotten the name of) they had Germaine Greer whinging bitterly about how awful they were.

Sorry for the thread subversion. Perhaps we need more argument on the merits of sites. 'Oh I think the Rollrights are simply marvellous' 'Oh no they're just a pile of stones in a field'. Maybe not.

>Give art back to the people for godssakes.<

Couldn't agree more.

Going off at a bit of a tangent I'm afraid but discovered the Yale Center for British Art website yesterday. Apologies to folk who already know the site but if you're interested in Blake's illustrations of Jerusalem The Emanation of The Giant Albion (which includes his depiction of Stonehenge) they can be found at -

http://www.blakearchive.org/cgi-bin/nph-dweb/blake/Illuminated-Book/JERUSALEM/jerusalem.e/@Generic__BookView;cv=java

(last illustration if I remember correctly). If you go to the YCBA homepage and then search under Blake's Milton a couple of other illustrations of megaliths come up - amazing stuff!
