The Grey Stone

Same thing twice!

close

Ey up Ed!
Sorry about this: we've got the same Grey Stone (Yorkshire section) twice. One entry as simply 'Grey Stone' and the other as 'The Grey Stone.'

Why do we have the word "the" before any of the sites? - e.g. The Twelve Apostles, or The Swastika Stone?, etc. Can we get rid of it? After all - who's gonna search out any site preceeded by "the"?

I couldn't agree more. The word 'The' has caught me out a number of times when search for a site that I KNOW I have seen here.

A good example of the use of "The" is this search

http://www.themodernantiquarian.com/search/?action=search&search_string=longstone&site_names=Y&filter=1

The "Longstone" standing stone near the top of the list is NOT actually "The Longstone", but simply a standing stone in a townland called "Longstone". There are, however, many stones called "The Longstone".

When a site has a proper name I think the "The" should be used.

Do we adopt the proper listing protocol of using "Swastika Stone, The" ? or at least ask the birthday boy list them that way?
