If you ask to dowse at SH during one of those inside the stones visits (and I'm sure people do) I'd guess the answer would be yes. Which would imply EH thought you were doing "nothing".

EH's discomfiture at having to imply dowsing did/didn't constitute doing something outside one's own head. A quango in a quandary is always good for a laugh (please don't try paint me as anti-dowsing, that simply wouldn't be correct).
