I'd, personally, go back to "any means necessary"!

A combination of all the aforementioned methods, and any we've not covered yet. :D Anything to get the buggers in place, cos I doubt any glacial activity had the good grace to leave 'em laying in perfect circles! ;)

And for most stones I expect getting them out of the actual 'quarry' itself must have been the most difficult bit. Imagine having to hoist them over other stones before you could even begin the 'easy' bit because I don't expect all the useable ones were neatly lying on the edges waiting to be collected.
