Coming to this as a complete outsider, so please shoot me down in flames, but why can't oxen have been used? They were domesticated in Europe around 4000bc ?

They very well may have been used for moving stones..

Whatever theory you favour. the stones will need to be moved at some point.

How, it was done remains unanswered..

Hi RR,

I think it's probably down to a variety of methods... but I'm not sure as to whether oxen/auroch power would have made it up the slope from the Vale of Pewsey. Of course, it could have been rowed up.... :)
