Does seem a bit of an overkill - I don't seem to remember there being any reports of trouble in the last few years to warrant such actions!

Isn't it a little over the top? I mean - how many other places in the UK will have crowds of people celebrating? And how many of those will have NO police presence whatsoever? Or fences?

Ah well - I'll not be there anyway but will be interested, as ever, to hear how it goes. :)

think about it.
Sometime soon the new visiters center will have to be built which will mean no solstice gatherings until after the Olympics are over.
Extra police means tensions which means at some point people will kick off.
EH then have the perfect excuse to clear the site in time for 2012 and beyond.
EH don't want Olympic visiters seeing the annual invasion by the great unwashed...
