"Only putting the avenue stone theory because theres a heavy argument in favour of "altar stone" whereas it could have come from somewhere else"

Yes, but we do have a bit of solid textual evidence linking them with Stonehenge itself - the fact a stone was taken to St James. So I guess that has to be the lead hypothesis doesn't it? "Anywhere else" may well be the truth of it but there's no clues pointing that way.

mmm.."John Aubrey informs us that PhilipEale of Pembroke did say, that an altar stone was found in the middle of the Area here, and that it was carried away to St.James (Westminster) 1868 tried to trace the stone - but no such stone existed at the Court of St.James ..
Castleden; "it looks as if some garbling of a real event took place, or that Aubrey simply misinterpreted Pembroke's evidence".. then dear old Mrs. Trotman comes in "one large stone was taken away to make a Bridge by the inhabitants about the Amesburies" not exactly conclusive evidence...
