Hate to say this but was'nt Atkinson a typical overbearing arrogant male archaeologist of his time, Piggott was similar - demi-gods, Indiana Jone types, academic/publicity, glory seeking nincompoops. Women archaeologists though(at this time) had a tendency to be more meek and mild ;)
