Thought i might pop down this year, as i can drive now. Never been able to before, so was wondering whats the deal with access to the circle etc... do you need tickets, or just turn up? No mention on the National trust/English Heritage sites.

Haven't been anywhere near Stonehenge for years. Used to get chased around by the police a lot in the mid/late 80'smat the festy, which rather tarnished its appeal. And being one that likes to mooch around a place, i've never been really been satisfied with the idea of a perambulation around the outer path that now exists.

Any help/advice muchly appreciated.

Oh, also, bit daft this, but non of us can agree on the date of it, 21st/22nd or 23rd Dec.

22nd this year.
EH will allow people in before sunrise.

Isn't Sunset the time to be there?

22ND it should be. Opens at 7:45, but you have to leave before the official opening to the paying public at 9:30. Really, it should be winter solstice sunset but Health and Safety won't let people up there after dark (nothing to do with EH) as there are no lights on the path, and believe me that path can take a huge chunk out of you if you fall on it! The stones used to be lit up some years back but the cops asked EH to turn the lighting off as people were gawking and crashing their cars on the a303.
