The way I read it he moved a barn across a field. Surely he didn't lay a conctrete path to do this?

That's true, but with a barn the weight to size ratio (density) is quite low, so he was able to have quite a low pressure over a fairly large point of contact. A stone block has a much higher density and so the contact pressure is much higher and the pivot stone would just get pressed into the ground. You could, of course, put a steel spreader-plate underneath like they do when moving safes, but that's hardly authentic.
