Isn't it where it is because of the lattitude?

The sighting along the pairs of station stones at the soltices(?) form a pair of parallel lines. Something like one sights W to E the other E to W.

If all four stones are joined up they make a lovely rectangle, something impossible from lattitudes further to the north and south. (which would give you a wonky rectangle instead).

They knew back then that it was hip to be square.

Surely it was erected there so it could be seen by 18 million vehicles a year passing on the A303, who turn on EH when the tunnel is built, trapping them in Saville Row they eat their way towards the ground floor swallowing whole listed buildings in their path, then just at the very last minute dupedheroes Captain Cossons and Tornado Thurley discover defunct plans for a tunnel and do what EH do best - bore their way out of it....

Sorry to all concerned, a funny five minutes overtook me....

The Crazy Frog has me for a ringtone !

Hello Elderford, Just reading the same in 'Keys to the Temple' by David Forlong. Any ideas about the chioce for the longitude positioning?

Hello Again Elderford, for those who are not aware:
'The Keys to the Temple' by David Furlong.

<The earliest phase of building at Stonehenge was established by radio-carbon dating in 1996 to have been started around 2950BC. This involved the construction of a circular ditch, and setting up Four unremarkable stones in a rectangle, which is now known by the rather unprepossesing name of the Station Stone Rectangle. This is no rdinary rectangle. It was carefully planned out, indicating by the different alignments of the stones the midsummer sunrise and the midwinter sunset, as well as the sunrises and sunsets on the February and May quarter days. In addition - and just as significantly - it also depicts the extreme positions of moonsise and moonset in the 18.61 year lunar cycle.>

You know, when I read things like this I, seriously start to doubt everything I ever learnt in school about history. I just cannot imagine people with such knowledge pulling / rowing massive stones around our countryside with pieces of wood. Is it just me?

>>If all four stones are joined up they make a lovely rectangle, something impossible from lattitudes further to the north and south. (which would give you a wonky rectangle instead).

I've heard this point before but not been entirely convinced by it. It's one of those things where I suppose it's difficult to argue that an approximation would be good enough because accuracy is central to the proposal.

However, the rectangle is not an accurate one. The dimensions are (quoting Aubrey Burl): long sides 79.9m and 80.3m (0.5% difference); short sides 32.7m and 34.2m (4.6% difference). Consequently, the angles are not right angles (89d 25m, 89d 33m, 91d 2m and 90d 1m).

I vaguely remember him saying somewhere else (but cannot now find the reference) that for the true rectangle to exist Stonehenge would have to have been built in the Irish Sea!

That is not to say that astromonical alignments do not exist at the Station Stones. They do but not in a way that forms a rectangle.

There is, I think, another view on the Station Stones - that they were used to determine the centre of the stone circles (which are not concentric with the henge). Not sure I understand this point but, if it's true, it could imply that the Station Stones were not part of the original Stonehenge.
