>they refused me entrance because one of my group was in a wheelchair and might damage the >ground

Seriously?

As in 'Please tell me this is not so, lest I explode in a burst of incandescent fury'.

Totaly true.
Gerald Hawkins bought me 3 days of access to photograph the full moonrise.
I did it on the first day.
Second Day I took my neighbour, a young gilr in her 30's who has a disease which will kill her soon, she always wanted to go inside Stonehenge but they refused us entrance because the electric wheel might churn up the tuft. I was furious! Still bloody am!
When they let 300 people in for solstice I went back to look at the ground, it was a right bloody mess.
Thats EH for ya!
