In the English Heritage Guide to 'Stonehenge and Neighbouring Monuments' Phase Three the layout of the monument is shown having two Heel stones, two intermediate stones and three Portal stones. With only a passing interest in the night sky one can recognise the layout of these stones in the Constellation of Orion … albeit as viewed in the Southern Hemisphere. When the car park to the monument was being extended remains of three large wooden posts were discovered. Today these are represented by marker spots on the car park surface. Interestingly the pattern is as the belt stars of Orion.
It was noted that on the evening of the Summer Solstice Orion passed overhead. Around 2500 BC, the considered date of Stonehenge, the belt stars would be half altitude between now and the horizon. Circa 6,600 BC a Druid standing mid henge would have seen the middle belt star (Alnilan) on the centre Portal and horizon between the Heel stones.
