Or anchor the ends of two ropes to something big. Tie the other ends to the top of the stone. Insert big stick between the ropes and wind like a bastard!

No one can tell me that they weren't aware of the force genreated by twisting two ropes ... after all, you make rope by twisting it. Two and two etc ...

Yes, its called a Spanish windlass. I didn't mention it before because there is some debate as to when it was discovered and therefore we would raise even more controversy by using it. Some believe it was known to the Egyptians at the beginning of the Bronze Age, so I guess why not the Brits?
