No Free Peeking!

Stonehenge parking fees begin

Car parking charges come into force at Stonehenge on Monday to
stop tourists sneaking a free peek at the stones.

English Heritage says hundreds view the ancient monument from
the car park, to avoid paying the £5 entrance fee.

But from now on, each car will be charged £2 to park and coaches
have to pay £10. The fee will be refunded when visitors buy an
entrance ticket.

The charges were tested in a week long experiment earlier this
month and will be in force throughout the summer.

Are they going to charge when you enter towns or cities with castles eg Rochester, Corfe, on the grounds that you can glimpse the castle 'for free' from anywhere in the town?
(in the case of most castles on hills, from anywhere 10 miles round) This could be a bit of a money maker.

I heard an EH spokesman say on the radio today that the charge will be reviewed when they stop charging at the end of the season. How much will it be next year, I wonder?

I must check out what happens to folks who don't have to pay an entrance fee, such as National Trust members.
