I'm going later in the year (can't wait!). It is said that the Stones of Stenness & The Ring Of Brodgar were both part of a greater megalithic complex. Looks like the ancients were pretty serious about what they were doing on Mainland Orkney.
Can anyone recommend a good Burl-type book that covers all the Orkney treasures?
Cheers now!

No, I can't but will be VERY interested to see what Wideford suggests, perhaps, as Moth and me will be there over midsummer.... CAN'T WAIT!

Though undoubtedly we'll be able to pick up a locally produced 'something' on Mainland.

If you are enquiring about henges there are only 2 stone circles . If the Ring of Bookan is a henge it destroys the theory about Bookan tomb marking the end of the specifically sacred landscape . A nice glossy book that covers Orkney down to pre-Viking times is "Prehistoric Orkney" by reknowned archaeologist Anna Ritchie (Historic Scotland).
