Growing up in Blackpool one would occasionally see the Isle of Man, even though it was beyond the horizon. I think it was a result of layers of hot and cold air causing a mirage type effect.
In all my time there I only saw it two or three times, on one occassion floating above the horizon reflected below itself.
So for residents of the Fylde Coast, the Isle of Man is intermittant...

Iv'e noticed The Isle of Man from Greycroft stone circle Cumbria and Holyhead mountain Anglesey and rather fancy that it can be seen from everywhere around the irish sea.
If it really does become invisible perhaps it's the inspiration for Atlantis
