I was very surprised to see the three legs symbol in an italian restaurant today. I asked the man and he said it's the symbol of Sicily, next to it was the other symbol, a big sun-god. No way I said, this is a British symbol, from the Isle of Man. He looked down on me, and smiled at my ignorance. It was a typical example of transcontinental ignorance. Does anyone know of this symbolic connection or if it stems from the common indoeuropean heritage before the celtic past? It seems that the Manx three legs are not as old as the Sicilian ones. This is what I have found on the subject:

I have always understod that the Manx symbol is a sun symbol. So is the swastika and the equal armed cross within a circle. Very ancient and nothing to do with Celts who never lived in Man anyway. Lots of similar designs in Scandinavian rock art of the Neolithic and Bronze Ages. Wheeled devices also common on La Tene and Hallstatt metalwork.
