I'm away up to Cumbria next week for a few days staying at Moorhouse by Carlisle. On the way up, or back, I willl be looking in at Castlerigg but does anyone have any suggestions for places of interest near to where I am staying please? Thanks in anticipation.

Over the Scottish border, you're quite close to The Twelve Apostles of Holywood. Girdle Stanes and Loupin Stanes are also reasonably close. Personally, I'd be willing to put in the extra miles to get to Cairnholy and Torhousekie as well.

In Cumbria, Long Meg, Gunnerkeld and Gamestones are within striking distance. Swinside is a bit of a hike from where you're staying, but you might want to consider it either on the way there or back. It's really a corker.

Persuade your chauffeur to come off the M6 at Junction 38 - take in Gamelands (10mins from Junction 38) and then drive up the A6 taking in whatever you can around Shap (oddendale, gunnarkeld, avneue stones?)and stopping at Mayburgh Henge (5 mins from Junction 40) before getting back on M6 at Penrith. Oh and if You are going that way you might as well go over to Askham and climb up the moor to see the Cockpit and the cairns up above Ullswater - all very nice.

Girdle Stanes & Loupin Stones - probably under an hour from the wrong side of Carlisle - near Samye Ling Tibetan Buddhist monastery if that tickles your fancy. Plenty of offerings on the bush there and no nasty farmers to cut it down ; )

Have fun cx
