It doesn't have to be a stone circle, i'm looking for the wow factor mainly that will stick in the memory and have me hooked and drawn back to the area (biggest hill my lad has seen is mam tor and win hill) i would like it to be somewhere away from the crowds though. i've got very good backpacking gear so being away from civilization, shops etc is no problem, i'm also pretty confident with a map and compass.
I want it to be an adventure for the lad with an overnight stay close to a site for myself, i'm sure cumbria has many places like this and i'm open to suggestions.
cheers.
Hi Megadread,
For lonely stone circles I'd recommend the Burnmoor complex, bleak and beautiful, and you could camp up there, with Scafell, the second highest mountain in England above. Good campsites and pubs exist in Eskdale.
For a sheer wow factor, well, it has to be the Pike of Stickle stone axe factory, although great care is required to reach it, as the ground is very steep and loose, and disturbance must be avoided. There is a National Trust campsite at the head of Great Langdale, although you could camp on the tops, and a fantastic boozer in the Old Dungeon Ghyll. Copt Howe rock art is nearby.
For all sites check out the nearby facilities on the links.
The usual sites will have a lot of visitors at this time of year (school hols).
Have a good 'un, wherever you go,
TE.
Thanks for that and to everyone who's replied.
Just had a look at the sites in that area and White moss stone circle looks a good choice, it reminds me of my local Derbyshire circles and with scafell nearby think that may be the clincher.
I know i'll miss out on the beautiful larger circles but the wild and barren atmosphere with a bit of wow factor thrown in is exactly what i'm looking for.
Anyone know how far it would be to walk to the site from a place i could safely leave the van overnight. ?

Surprised no one has mentioned Long Meg & Her Daughters and the delightfully carved Little Meg - although last year when I went the carvings are almost invisible compared to when I first visited ten years ago.

I'm sure you could leave your van as safely as anywhere in Boot, which is where I think most peeps walk from.

It's a pretty damn steep climb to begin with, but not all that far. Gets very boggy up on the top tho! Enjoy!

I parked in a carpark near or in boot when I went up to see White Moss & Brat's Hill. It's nice up there, I could imagine it without the peat as a lovely safe enclosed valley.

Personally though, I'd favour the Pike of Stickle stone axe factory, as others have said. And I say that having seen 80% of the circles in the lakes district.
The view from the top is amazing and you get to see where the folk that built the circles actually started off those wonderful green lakes axes. Thats all wow to me!
