I looking to get up to Cumbria for the first time pretty soon to take one of my lads on his first camping trip, i'm being drawn towards Sunkenkirk for some reason though i can't explain why.
Probably because you've seen photos of it - yes it really is that marvellous - and heard us all RAVE about it. Go there, megadread! Like Sunkenkirk, Castlerigg is, of course, a MUST SEE. And you CAN be alone there. You may just have to wait a while. You're going to LOVE it.

Sunkenkirk is a must and usually quiet. Twas a wonderful cold, wild Cumbrian day when I went up with Vicky and it felt pretty desolate. Fab.

Castlerigg - mmhhhh, only ever been once when no-one else was around and that was on a Tuesday in February!

Shap is pretty cool - follow the path of the old avenue to Skellaw and the Thunder Stone then head up to Iron Hill and Oddendale. The vast hole the quarry has ripped out of the landscape makes for a pretty amazing (if rather unsightly) view.
