The Roman's used the bank and ditch technique as well though, when they built their wooden marching camps.

Agreed, but these were normally very light defensive works with the ramparts being the spoil from the freshly dug ditch. Anything much larger such as forts & fortresses have had further settlements built on and around the sites.

It is purely my thoughts that the much earlier earthworks are far more substantial.
