Several of the Bolton stones have square holes, of course. When I look at them I think 'there's been a squared balk jammed in here'. It's interesting guessing though. ( http://www.themodernantiquarian.com/image.php?image_id=10124 )

Another possibility for the small ritual stones are trading weights. Market standards. Someone will have weighed them and disproved that, no doubt.

Is the Megalithic Yard now completely abandoned as an explanation ? I supposed it was a mean Bronze Age pace as wallers (and the man from DEFRA) still calculate distance in this way. A modern pace used to be called a Yard, but is now known as a Metre - in the field.

Thanks for this support, by the way.

sorry for being flippant btw - sometimes I can't resist. it doesn't mean I'm not interested in the serious talk on these subjects too. Hope I don't get in the way too much. Let me know if I do and I'll desist.

The folks in the Arran Islands were paid to build walls by lengths of '22 paces' as recently as 1940. I supposed you waited until the short bloke from the ministry came around.
