It's the fact that the central holes are square that makes me think that..... no, it can't be.

But then again, if you make a hole for something to fit through, then if it's a square hole it suggests you need it to be a very very strong fit.

So if you take two sticks, and square off the ends...

(Well why not, the Egyptians had thought of it by then)
