Well there is very little written about them and no serious study has taken place because no one has a clue what the hell they were for.

There is the old folktale that neolithic Shamans made them because they could see into the future to a distant time when a young man would arrive in Avebury and collect all the research material into one place and store it by means of magick on a silver disk (Priced £18)

They could be loom weights couldn't they? and they could have been buried with a woman, perhaps so she could carry on weaving in the next world. Like it was mentioned above, lots of people have been buried with useful or personal objects. And they wouldn't need to look worn, because they don't get worn, they just dangle off a loom.

by the way, I heartily recommend devizes museum to anyone passing. it's a bit cramped but the gold objects out of one of the barrows near stonehenge - fantastic stuff.
