Avebury & the Marlborough Downs

Camp sites

close

Can anyone recommend any good family camp sites within spitting distance of the Marlborough TMA attractions (Avebury/Silbury/etc)?

Not a lot near Marlborough. Excellent family site near Melksham at Sells Green phone 01380 828839 OR near Calne is Blackland Lakes phone 01249 813672 www.blacklandlakes.co.uk

Booking essential in high summer

Either site will put you close to megalithic sites and a short run to Avebury etc.
Hope it helps

I don't do camping;-P but the weekend before last (Lammas) there were people camping just outside the henge, and camper vans parked on the village car-park all night. I know it's not 'allowed', but it seems if you are cheeky enough you can camp anywhere. Who's going to stop you?
In the early nineties, at the height of 'crusty' . . there used to be people camping all over. . by Silbury, at the Sanctuary.

I stopped at the New Inn at Winterbourne Monkton. Caught the bus into Avebury (every hour on the half hour) and walked back (about a mile). en suit bathroom and a full english breakfast next morning! £25 - Job's a good 'un!

The Barge pub at Honey Street, Alton Barnes, has camping facilities at the back (£9.00 a night last time I asked). It's situated right by the canal, has a garden with a view of the White Horse and there are plenty of nice walks close by. Avebury is about 10-15 minuets' drive away and Marlborough a bit further. The Bridge pub is close by (also situated by the canal) and does pretty good food.

I've always thought Avebury could really use a nice (tents only and no kids!) campsite.

Whoa!,
Many thanks for your input, I will give those places a try.
As for camping in the car park....I was looking for a quiet holiday enjoying the countryside and sights, not a run in with the law, the possibility of having to up-sticks at a moments notice and a fine.

Although please feel free to discuss merits of such activity.....
