I saw John Craven in Heritage Heroes at a Oak Tannery yesterday. A profession so old its origins are lost in history apparently. They had 70 pits, filled with increasingly strong tanning solutions which the leather is moved through over a period of months. Gardom's has over a 100 pits I think.

What a great idea, the thought of Gardoms been a center for leather production [it would make the enclosure a leather trading center], you just never know do you? Heavy dudes/dudess's coming from all over the country to get their top quality leathers is a funny thought, they may even have had designs on -"Go look at the designs on the rocks and tell us what you want", made me laugh and it's possible as well, great stuff.
