Calling Mr Hamhead

close

Mr Hamhead

I have it on authority that you know a fair bit about all things megalithic in Cornwall. Me and the future mrs jacksprat are down there in two weeks, is there anywhere you'd recommend in particular? I'm not familiar with the area at all - I'll probably only get one day to explore as I am the enthusiastic half of the partnership and have to compromise! If you (or anywhere else reading) could recommend some spots that could be visited in a day, I'd be really grateful to hear suggestions?

Thanks in advance
JS

Dear Mr Spratt

Where will you be staying?

Mr H

Hi JS, when are you down there? We're off down there on the 7th for a week, staying in Penzance.
Maybe chance of a meetup?

A.

morning
The penwith area is a must, magical and old. Men-an-tol, at least lanyon qouit and the merry maidens. the pub at zennor is good (worth going into the church to see the mermaid chair as well).

on the other-hand, bodmin moor is pretty full of stuff. King arthur's hall, though difficult to get to is interesting and there are plenty of circles near there.
have a great time, it is a magical place.
stu (an ex-resident who could see the sea from his school class-room, now sadly as about as far from the sea as you can get).

Did FMJ pick Truro for any particular reason ,only she seems to have uncannily chosen the part of cornwall with least in it, if there such a thing

Basically sir, Penwith is where is at......you can, with motor car, see an awful lot in a day. Even better, take a circular route or two on foot from a car. Meself is based just west o Truro these days......feel free to make contact for a local knowledge you.......

Looks like a few ideas have already come flooding in....

Penwith is a must as has already been said..Merry Maidens and Lanyon Quoit are beside roads so easy to do..other sites require a bit of walking. Everyone has thier favourite...mine would be Carn Euny...settlement with fogou..and great views. You must drive the road from St Ives to St Just...fantastic landscape incl Bronze Age field patterns..then when you get to St Just carry on out to Ballowal Barrow for a view over the Atlantic. You could from there walk down to Cape Cornwall.....don't go to Lands End!

My main area is Bodmin Moor...Minions is a great place to start..the Hurlers, Cheesewring, Stowes Hill, Rillaton Barrow, Craddock Moor with its circle, stone row and embanked avenue, Long Tom,

So much to see..how much time have you got?

If you want me to meet up with you at Minions I may be able to..can't promiss sunshine though!

As for Truro..might not be the centre of the megalithic universe but it has a good shopping centre, nice museum and cathedral and some good pubs,,The Ale house is an old fave...really good Nepali and Italian restaurant (not together!).

Enjoy

Mr H

Right - I'm off. Thanks to everyone for advice, hoping the weather will hold out for us. I'll try and get some pics and a blog done and posted next week.

Have a good weekend all.

PS: Oficant - hope you had a great time down there - I expect we passed on the motorway somewhere...
