I'd like to pick the brains of the esteemed users of this website, if I may?

Me and Moth are thinking about a week in Cornwall in early spring. I wanna Fogoufest! I keep hearing the name of the town/village of St Just mentioned as a good base. Has anyone stayed there? If so can anyone recommend a holiday cottage to rent?
Where do you normally stay, purejoy, you're a regular visitor.... And Ocifant, where did you stay on your recent trip?

Any recommendations at all will be gratefully received!

St Just is the wild west of Cornwall, a square with cars on, and buildings that haven't changed their appearance since about 1959. I think there's a hotel but I can definitely recommend our Morfeticia's friend's hotel at Gurnards head, it's actually called Gurnards Head. Tell Joy that she was recommended by Tanya, if you happen by there ;-) her son is talented painter and you'd love his stuff, lots on display in there.

That's all I know about the area. Apart from Cot Valley beach, which has the double honour of being 1. A favourite morfespot and
2. It killed my Nikon.

There's a single standing stone between Gurnard's Head and St Just, dunno what it's called but I must post a pic of it. Tiny thing in a green field behind a stone wall.

You lucky things :-)

Jane,
St Just is magic, Zennor even more so. I park my camper where I will so cannot suggest accomodation. Cheryl Straffon of Meyn Mamvro is local and may be able to help.

Most recently, we stayed in family accomodation - Mikki's sister lives down that way, and her sister in law has a chalet on one of the sites.

We'll be going down in March again ourselves. Probably use one of the holiday sites - John Fowler is cheap. Cottages tend to be quite pricey (200 quid plus per week), even at that time of year.

No need to actually stay in St Just - the whole of Penwith is small enough that you can get anywhere within 20-30 minutes - we tend to stay up near St Ives as it gives a quick getaway for the sites outside of Penwith itself - give us a call later tonight and we can chat about it...

Have you considered St Ives? Lots of cottages for rent and the rates are far more reasonable at this time of the year. The tourist information office there should be able to give you a list of letting agents - the private ones can prove most reasonable.

This then puts you in striking distance of St Just but a nice cosy base to return to in the evening, via Gurnards Head hotel for tea, then back into St Ives for a drink or two in The Sloop on the harbourside.

Feel free to mail me if you want more information - I have Houdini scouring the rolledex as I type looking for any contact numbers that might be of help. We always stay at 'Hakey Bay' when embarking on Cornish adventures.

We stayed in Trewellard, just by St Just (sic) a couple of years ago, in a cheap and cheerful campsite with free everything run by a strange lady and her probably now deceased Dad.
It was fantastic. Quiet, dark (stars x 10000000000000) beautiful, and an excellent base for tip of cornwall sites. We visited men an tol and several others.

Just to hijack this thread - sorry JanenMoth - I was also thinking of Cornwall BUT can it be done by train/coach and can you get around by bus when you get there?

I'm sure you'll love it wherever you stay Jane. I've written short reviews on the three places I've stayed at but none are in Penwith. One was very north (above Bodmin Moor), one was near Liskeard (i.e. south of the Moor) and one was on the west coast at Perranporth. I'm not a fan of endless phone calls so all have good websites!
