Rhiannon has posted up a really good quote from JJ Daniell, the (now very) former Curate of Warminster. He was writing in 1879, so he was enlightened for his time (in a slightly Christian sort of way):

When you read how some of the barrows were excavated and how casually the things they found in them were treated (and then lost) it does surprise you how keen they were to keep opening the things - must have been the lure of gold 'treasure'.
