If I've got my facts right (what's the chances of that then?), no, it's not. They tried their best to not find anything, by using a 5th of the usual sample size, but even then, evidence was found which could indicate a settlement in the proposed quarry area.

So if it this area gets trashed, bang goes a big part of the available evidence which might shed some light on the purpose of these lovely great monuments.

It's a crying shame that the Aggregates Levy Fund conundrum seems to prevent academics from feeling they can publically decry this quarry application.

Bah! Shift the machinery and get yer gravel elsewhere Tarmac, you stingy, profiteering so-and-sos...

These are my favourite bits:

>But archaeologists working for Tarmac say there is only "thin and scattered" evidence of prehistoric activity.<

Oh that's alright then - can't be important if it's thin or scattered. It needs to all be found in one place to be important. And the miniscule sample size (2% or whatever it is) will really find stuff that's not 'thin and scattered' won't it??? GRRRRR!!!!!!!

>Archaeologist Steve Timms from MGA said: "With the exception of just seven shallow pits which contained Neolithic finds, very little else has been found.... Apart from two fragments of pottery we have no evidence for Roman or medieval activity at all and most of the prehistoric finds were collected from the surface of the fields during the field walking..."

So SEVEN pits with neolithic stuff needs to be backed up with some PROPER history - ie R*man & medieval - to be worth saving. And stuff that's found by fieldwalking won't matter when they dig a big FUCKING HOLE called a QUARRY.....

"The evidence suggests that people were doing something on the site in the Neolithic period but there is not enough evidence to say what it was."

And TARMAC are paying our wages, so fuck it - we're not bothered about preserving the site to find more stuff that might TELL US 'what they were doing'.

Bloody hell, I hope this turkey was misquoted!!!!! (Even if he wasn't , he'll say he was....) Actually, no, I hope he wasn't. What great 'ammo' for Timewatch's Tbro campaign!!!!
