The Thornborough Henges

This is a plea for help. In fact it is a plea to help the largest henge complex in prehistoric Britain - possibly Britains first religious capital.

Tarmac have applied for planning permission for the quarrying of land close to the Triple Henge complex at Thornborough.

The current quarry has already destroyed hundreds of archaeological features including the only known Mesolithic double pit alignment in the world and around 25 graves spanning from the Neolithic to Iron Ages. The proposed area is ten metres away from "the largest concentration of Neolithic features discovered in the North of England" yet miraculously, Tarmac don't think there will be much archaeology on the site.

Go to our website - www.heritageaction.org/thornborough.html for details or ask me here if you are not sure about anything at all. This was one of THE places to be in the Neolithic Pagan calendar - people travelled here from all over Britain to be involved with ceremonies that involved Solar, Luna and Stallar alignments, burial of high status individuals and deposition of valuable objects in water - one axe came from Penzance. The application site includes a water deposition area - possibly the last remaining one. It also includes the untouched half of the "ritual" settlement that revealed the largest Neolithic remains in the north of England.

It is very likely that the application has already been given "the nod" but it has only just been submitted. Now is the time to act.

Think about it - this is part of a 40 mile long alignment of seven identical henges - each is the fifth largest henge in Britain - the alignment is two ruler straight lines - one between Catterick and Tadcaster, the other strikes off from the centre of this line - Borroughbridge and travels to Thornborough. Try to find any other henge or stone circle complex to match this and you will quickly find that this is the largest construction of the Neolithic period - why do you not know about it? forty years of quarrying and one of the wealthiest companies in the world, thats why.

You need to act - write a letter of objection to our council. It does not matter where you live, we need to impress on them exactly how many people are going to be upset if this goes through.

Send me an email - [email protected] and I will send you a letter writing kit - all you have to do is fill in your name and address and the reason for objection (samples supplied), print it off, sign it and post it. It really is simple.

Come on, help us make this the turning point in Thornborough's tragic history, it is the greatest testimony to ancient man's inginuity in Britain - do not let them erase it.

Sorry for the double post, but I know a lot of people don't visit HH that do TMA.

I can feel a ranting letter of my own coming on.
Where and to whom at the council should these letters be sent?

Can I download the letter writing kit from heritageaction.org, George?

I've just written mine and it's in the post.
Really - this is ever so simple and quick so you should all do it too. If you get George's pack it's pretty much done for you as he includes a helpful list of points you can pick from to make.
Come on, it'll only take you a minute :)

Thanks everyone - mission accomplished!

We got 550 letters of objection by the first (statutory) deadline. We could have had more - many are still coming in, but that was enough to get us in a wide variety of press coverage, including TV, Radio and Papers. This concludes the first phase of our campaign.

"Talk" is the theme for August - we will be trying to take the henges to a much broader audience - anyone who fancies dropping a few leaflets in letterboxes just let me know.

If any of you are at a loose end and want to come and talk henges, Thornborough Action will be at the Aldborough Show close to Borroughbridge tomorrow. We will have our "Mobile Henge Display Unit" with us and that always draws attention - the headline is "Triple Temple to the Stars!"

To all of you who just writing a letter was enough effort for now - thanks a lot and rest easy, I'm willing to bet there will be a new application in about six months time - I'll come knocking then.
