Yes, I had the puddle and stick thought some time ago, but I'm wondering if messing about with those would involve too great a possible margin for error? I'd tend to think the eye was the best instrument.
But didn't they do well? See composite picture here...

Coincidence?(NS) Deliberate, but flukey accuracy?(also NS) No more than they ought to have achieved (FW)? Brilliant?(also NS) Spacemen? (George!)

Only George is definitely wrong!

It's all done by eye - and with rods and string. Bits of notched wood.

There's a kite pattern in the sky - at this moment. The moon on one side of the earth, opposite to venus, which has saturn and uranus equally disposed thirty degrees away.

There are three curricks close together at Kirkhaugh - http://www.themodernantiquarian.com/post/20531 - it seems just about possible that the stars we know as Orion's Belt may have set behind these markers at a certain time of the year, viewed from the main site a good mile away. The only test is to try it. Compensation for procession may be achieved by stepping on a box.

Typical, I come up with a perfectly acceptable theory and I get slated! Well that's that last time I'm posting to this board.

Well let me just say this - look at the shape of those henges - remind you of anything? the remains of earth left behind after flying saucers have been hidden then flown away? Thought so, laughing on the other side of your face now aren't you.
