Yes that sounds very familiar. Anyone who has watched the draining of ponds on the perimeter of a small town will recognise the process.

The nature lobby are far more vociferous than kindly antiquarians. If just one Red Data book creature or plant can be found - I'm thinking particularly of the Great Crested Newt, which favours flooded gravel pits - then that would strengthen the case for conservation greatly.

In theory she (the Rt. Hon. Teresa Jowell MP) oversees EH and will actually reply 'address this complaint to the Chief Exec. of EH' but the situation is of national importance and she should now be involved in halting this destruction.
