Stone Of Odin

the mitochondria is not part of the normal 46 chromosomes(23 in sex cells) it is called an organelle and exists with its own DNA with in the cell (used in energy processes if my memory serves me well). It is only passed on by the female as stated earlier and is often used in studies due to this and its robustness, it tends to change less from generation to generation as it is isolated ( daugters of eve etc).
Anyway i have to dash but if you think of it as a female Y chromosone (although it is noway this) due to its transmission it is useful

Just to note i said there that mitochondial DNA did not change much from generation to generation this is not true( I was getting mixed up as usual) it actually has quite a high mutation rate but has still been used successfully to study the female line.
It is more often used in ancient DNA studies due to there being lots of them in the cell and also the small size of its chromosme is less likely to fragment in the way the cells much larger nuclear DNA does over time.
please excuse my error
