Maes Howe

Living near the North Walean border and frequently travelling into North Wales there is always usually some farmhouses called Maes.... which suggests that the word has been used down the millenia for depicting a type of dwelling rather than some sort of burial chamber. This is an interesting point you have picked up on and I'll do some more research and let you know. Hope this has helped in some small way.

hi thanks for the message. i asked my welsh speaking ladies that i know about this today, the one who was less versed in welsh said maes (pronunced mice apparently) meant house but the other lady who was welsh mother tongue said it meant more a place or field they had no idea about Howe though. The question of course is when did maes howe start to get called this ? has that always been its name or has it changed or evolved over the years?
cheers
