Gotta agree with Hob about the cross-base idea: it's probably not one. I think it'd be a good idea to get hold of the field-name survey of this place - that might give some idea about this 'ere stone.

Beckensall's book shows it as "Part of The Lawns" which isn't much help, as The Lawns seems to be a nearby farm.
Where else would one go to find a list of old field names?
