Not alot is written about one of the biggist hillfort in europe. Is it becouse of the two working quarrys on top, or is it coz' you thing maiden Castle is the only one worth note. Try Following the line of the ramparts and seen how tied your littile legs get ????? Or just come to see the wondfull part of south somerset. ST 482 162

Yep, there's nothing you can do about quarries, if they decide a place has to go, it will.

Money you see, its all money. Even if it was the biggest in Europe, it still would not matter.

I'll let you know how my little legs go as I'll be there next week! Not sure you can follow the line of all the ramparts now mind as not all are there, but it's definitely worth the walk round and the view across the levels is just wonderful. I'd go for Cadbury Castle or Castle Hill, Mere over Maiden Castle every time, but that's personal choice :o)

I was there last year for a historical festival. Not the easiest site to pitch a tent on, with the bedrock about two inches below the turf and the wind howling across the top of the hill, but we managed it in the end. There were Romans, Victorians, Iron Age Celts building a round house, and us medieval Welsh - and fifteen local schools had built giant puppets to perform a play about the history of the site.
It also has quite a nice pub inside the hillfort.

Ooh, sounds nice. I've yet to see most of Somerset's Hill Fort...
I have however declared this year to be the Summer of the Hillfort, something the long walk hating gf is trying to stop in its tracks!

I'll add this one to the list...

Hello!

Um, maybe I'm oversensitive, but what a strange way to phrase it! ;^) I think you'll find a lot of us have visited quite a few hillforts other than Maiden Castle & aren't afraid of a bit of a walk! (Tho actually, I've never got round to going up Maiden Castle! LOL!) :^)

love

Forgot about this, but last year joined a hillfort group (which seems to be defunct now) but on their links stuff, I put a long (very long) list of Somerset and Gloucester Hillforts, might even have the Wiltshire one round somewhere..

Will give you the link if you want it, got a bit cross about it because I can't take my list off now ;)
