Cursus, I think its a fair bet that both the Giant and the Long Man are part of DEFRA agri-environment schemes. These are administered by English Nature and are designed to ensure land use on the part of the farmer that not only protects archaeology but also all aspects of wildlife. To me, brown grassland = an awful lot of dead butterfly larvae especially, in those locations, scarce blue species. Might be worth an enquiry.

This picture sums up the tragedy of what has been happening to hill-figures this Summer:

It was probably taken the morning after the latest damage was done, August 25th, as the slogan was mowed away very quickly. The paint on the penis has been mostly removed, but has still caused long term damage to the figure.

The Homer Simpson figure is still very visible.

What a bloody, and uneccessary, mess.

I will make noises in appropriate directions.
