I've thought about the step ladder idea as well but not done anything about it so far. As for the pole and release cable idea you could try holding a tripod above your head and using the self timer on the camera (mine doesn't have a cable attachment thingy). It's a bit hit and miss but it does work -

Seen Baza the badger demonstrate the unipod above head & timer shutter-release method.

I've waved my tripod in the air many a time and for many years now.

Works a treat, especially with a digi, 'cause like folks have said you can keep retrying and deleting until it's good.
