Good point.
I think I'd just sort of accepted it as being a valid continuation of a more ancient practice... You know; 'it's old so it's worthwhile and ok'..
Unless the coins killed the trees...

Pushing coins into trees comes from the old tradition of travelling carpenters knocking nails into trees at ancient sites when they passed. These nails were for folk to tie their clouties to. The link being Jesus was a carpenter, so nails placed by a carpenter were more sacred than one you'd knocked in yourself.
