Generally speaking I agree with you there Mr S, but saplings can be planted and grow – prehistoric henges cannot. And the comparison made elsewhere that people walking up and down Silbury ‘carefully and with respect’ is somehow relevant is pure nonsense. We can all do things carefully and with respect but it doesn’t change one iota the accumulative damage such actions result in - and that should be made perfectly clear to whoever is doing it (and that’s neither ranting or being dogmatic - it’s being clear, abiding by the rules and striving to protect our heritage for future generations).

The point I was making, which seems to have been completely missed, was that whilst its easy to pontificate on the internet about the rights and wrongs of certain behaviours - a more tactful approach is often needed in real life dealing with real people. The points mentioned by your venerable self were indeed made, hopefully in a manner which didn't alienate the person concerned.
