That`s what the copper said to me as I was being allowed to go.

Oh, dear!

On a trip down to the Cotswolds today, I visited the Longstone of Minchinhampton. As Gatcombe Lodge long barrow is only a couple of hundred yards away, I thought I might as well go and have a look at that, too.

Unfortunately, Gatcombe Lodge long barrow happens to be on the Gatcombe Park estate (Princess Anne`s home). There`s a footpath which runs close to the barrow and I only meant to walk past and have a look. Anyway, I couldn`t resist. I went through a gate and onto the barrow. An estate worker spotted me as he went past in a Discovery; he blocked the entranceway and phoned the security.

A Land Rover duly arrived with two police officers, who did a full check on me and my motor. They could see that I was an unlikely terrorist, with my sandals, shorts and Stonehenge Tshirt. When the all-clear came through, I was allowed to go with a rollocking.

Don`t thing I`ll go back there again.

"with my sandals, shorts and Stonehenge Tshirt"

surely an arrestable offence alone:-)

Good one Barry!

I've beento Minchinhampton a couple of times. The first time it took me ages to find, and despite knowing its wherabouts stil managed to drive past 3 times on the 2nd visit, I think its due to the stones being ' on edge' when viewed from the road and virtually invisible.

Also well worth visiting in the local area is the homemade icecream shop on the common, not exactly on topic, but well worth stopping off. Beware of the cows.

Congratulations baz! Great story!

I was looking forward to telling my 'chased by a very big bull' story from yesterday, but I think you've outclassed that one ....

.... It was a VERY big bull though, and he had his mates with him :-)

...where the fishstone is in powys. Prince Charles visits there and they go in for the shootin'n'fishin' thang.

we tried to visit during a shoot, and some strawdog stylee estate workers told us to turn back because we might be shot at.

needless to say, wimped out and turned around, but grumbled fiercely to one another about how unfair it was. yeh, we showed them.

One thing I haven`t mentioned .....

........there are *two* barrows in Gatcombe Park.

As well as [[Gatcombe Lodge]], there`s [[The Tinglestone]] long barrow, too.

Haven`t worked out what I`m going to put in my fieldnotes, yet.

So how the frig were you able to go straight through the gate?

Excellent security!

Good one Barry!

Hope that doesn't happen on our stones meets with our penchant for trespass!

Any chance of sharing that with the list? :-)

Cheers
