Depth probably depends on size of shell, these might be light artillery.

Agree that they are supposed to avoid blowing these things up though. Have you been to Castlemartin? There's a few hillforts and barrows completely inaccessible in the centre of the range there, which is used for tanks as well as artillery. Wonder what shape they're in?
