Lincolns proposed eastern bypass is going to pass straight though lincolns only known (existing) barrow cemetry!!! (at least 12 barrows), some of these barrows are scheduled ancient monuments!!!, but the course of the road misses the scheduled ones and goes though at least 3 barrows that arn't scheduled (surprise, surprise). I think that when new roads are being built (don't we have enough?) its all very well finding things as you go but a little different when you already know they're there! I've tried speaking to the council, they say english heritage back all the plans!! ( i thought they were meant to protect our heritage not agree to destroy it!!), This site is of massive cultural importance to Lincoln (and the country), for understanding the place in prehistory, not just the roman history ( the only history most people know of the place). I have also found what looks like a big henge ( Nearly thornborough size) + earthworks to the south west of it right next to the proposed road ( see explorer map 272- 006 717). You can see the site from the air on google earth though pastscape (type in lincoln castle and go to aerial photograph, find the site using the explorer map and numbers given above, the road passes though the top half of the site), the site is ( bank + ditch) clearly visible on site. I feel like i'm up against a wall and getting nowhere, What should i do? The $%^&*@#s have me down but not beat, I have declared war on them if they go ahead!! Does anybody know where i stand or have any-ways to help?

In France and Holland people are much more into getting around by bicycles and I just don't know what it will take to make British people use their cars less ... but therein lies your answer.

This is shameful. Lincolnshire is hardly overflowing with prehistoric monuments, making this one all the more important. People won't even walk round the corner to local shops though, so I don't think the road-building will stop any time soon (I am heartened by the renewed interest in trains for transporting freight).
I'd love to have a great suggestion for how this can be stopped, but the most depressing thing is that you just know that it won't be.

Branwen, just read your post and although you were already pretty much one of my favourite people on this forum, you have just gone up yet another notch.
Thesweetcheat - bus timetables are our language.
I've only been to Lincoln once, my father was in hospital. Parents had absconded to Chapel St Leonards on the Lincolnshire coast when they were probably old enough to know better - they had over a decade of 'being on holiday'. I got to know Lincolnshire very well and it will always have a place in my heart - big skies and far horizons; hardly any traffic except around Skeggie in the summer.
Bypasses up there just don't seem to make sense.

These guys help the Tripping Up Trump campaign.
They advise on all sorts of topics so you never know.

Appendix 7a of the Environmental Assessment lists all the sites of cultural importance that might be affected, dozens and dozens of them, which rather points up the fact you can't build anything in Britain without destroying something, so it's important not to be in the position of picking out a single case - unless it's head and shoulders more important than others or you're going to say you're against all development - the forces of smashing things up win hands down as they can dismiss modern antiquarians as cranks. Ask Tarmac et al.
Anyhow, in this case there are two possible bronze age round barrow cemeteries mentioned (129 and 146) (Do they mean barrow cemeteries or barrows?) So if they're only "possible" and therefore not scheduled I wouldn't think there's a big chance of getting them protected. The Rotherwas Ribbon wasn't "possible" it was all too real and a thousand times more important and the road that was allowed to be built over it was a thousand times less needed....
How can I help you in your fight?
I'm sure my local history society will be able to back you up, we're based in Nottinghamshire but will quite happily publicise your cause.

Hiya. I don't know what can be done about the road (I don't think Lincoln needs an eastern bypass myself) but looking through the reports and comparing with maps I've knocked up this plan based on the two sites that Nigel mentioned -
http://www.stone-circles.org.uk/bypass.jpg
The google map shows what looks like several barrows to the south of the river and I've added a dashed line round where the cemetery might be but nothing shows up at the grid ref given in the report for the north side of the river so I've no idea how big the cemetery might be on that side. The road overlay of 'Route Z' on the bottom image shows that it cuts through the southern cemetery but the image is my best guess estimate (ie it's not official).
As for interested parties have you tried the following, they may have been consulted or may have further information?

Their website doesn't seem to have been updated recently so I don't know if they are still operating.
