I don’t think any of us are arguing to put everything back to a point before mankind started to radically change the environment but simply not to mess with things as they are now (as far as possible) and when it is messed with to put it back as it was. In the context of this thread that means filling the hole created by an open cast mine and returning the landscape to what it was before it was mined - not creating a theme landscape that many are unhappy with and one that’s unlikely to last for more than a few years.

I've worked on an opencast restoration project and there is no way the land can be returned to how it was, in any real sense. What is recreated is a shallow representation of what was before - one which fool most people, of course, but one which is species poor and dysfunctional. Because of the down that people have on open water - somebody might drown - when pools (puddles) are created, then they become quickly populated by birds, which seem to show how successful the scheme is.
