Just for the sake of accuracy.
To say it's a northern thing isn't quite accurate, In our islands it's a Scottish, Welsh, Irish & English thing. In England its a - from the Borders to the Peaks thing which then picks up again in the south west.
It's also very much a global thing e.g. check out the beautiful Sardinian cup-marked megalithic puffball on page 433 of TME.

You're right there in terms of distribution. The global nature of them is a big part of what fascinates me about them.

When I said a northern thing, I meant that it seems to be mainly northerners who are interested in these isles. I was a bit zonked at the way that those cups on Fyfield Down were so ignored, given how much archaeological investigation has been done nearby, but I guess they just get eclipsed by the more glamourous stuff (which admittedly does yield more data).
