Hey up Baza,

I also managed to get down Cresswell to have a look at the engravings...and I completely agree that they were a proper buzz....
Only thing that sorta pissed me off was the no photos allowed bit....I was told that it was for "conservation reasons".....were you given any kinda reasons for not taking your camera in?
And...am I missing something here?.....like what happens to the engravings if you sorta did do?
Or is the Ibex camera shy?...nah can't be that..didn't it have a fookin' kinda silly beardy thing attached?

nice one
stu.

The same reason is given at Newgrange and Knowth. Flash photography could degrade pigments, but there's none at either site these days ... They quote respect for the 'Sacred Place' and the yanks go "Oooooh"*

The real reason is that they want all the royalty monies for images :-)

With smaller sites with little visitor traffic I fully appreciate this as being necessary to keep the site maintained, but with Newgrange and Knowth? I think not.

* Not all of them do this, just a few.

Stu, I'm really pleased to hear that you managed to get to see the engravings, too.

FW is correct about the photos - I was told that copyright is held by the discoverers.

Yes, one did have a 'fookin' kinda silly beardy thing attached', but I should point out that that was modern graffiti. So someone had seen this particular animal engraving before the experts arrived.
