I gave a talk last night at Sligo Institute of Technology on megalithic monuments around Sligo. One of the points I hope I made was that Maeve's Cairn on the top of Knocknarea ( http://www.themodernantiquarian.com/site/2302 ) should not be opened.

There seems to be a rash of excavations in Sligo right now. The vast majority of these are re-excavations of sites that were first investigated back in the early 1900s, but somehow it seems only a matter of time before eyes turn seriously upon Maeve's Cairn. It could be the only undisturbed passage tomb left (there are a couple of other candidates) and it's fully understandable that any archaeo should want to excavate it - it would, after all, make their career.

However, with technology advancing the way it is, it can only be a matter of little time before we can look into Maeve's Cairn and other such structures without destroying them.

Gill Swanton & Colin Shnell created a 3D model of Adams Grave using tomography and some clever software.
I'm sure the same techniques could be used elsewhere with fibre optic cameras.
Then of course there was the hugely expensive 3D model of Silbury that Skanka buggered up which is now next to useless.
Maybe a few years down the line the technology will improve enough to be really usefull.
